More bad luck: no show this week either…

I had the news all lined up and a recording time set with Richard and everything… but then I made the foolish mistake of rebooting my ailing computer. Well, trying to reboot it, I should say because while it will POST beep and show the BIOS splash screen, that’s all it will do. No user input is accepted, it hangs the instant it shows the ASUS logo.

I tried a bunch of things to revive it, but I fear my motherboard has motherboarded for the last time. I am trying to find an identical motherboard to limit the chances that I’ll have to reinstall Windows, but it’s a two-year-old piece of hardware, so I can’t find it locally and trying to find things on the internet with my Blackberry is like trying to bring in the wheat harvest with a bucket and a butter knife.

So, I am trying to sort out my finances to see if we can afford it this week and if so, I hope to borrow someones computer to order it have a new one by next week. Sorry about the show, guys; that’s a whole month now with no new stuff and I feel pretty bad about it. I was hoping I’d have something figured out by the time the show was supposed to go up, but it’s Wednesday night and I just don’t see it happening.

I’ll keep you guys posted. Don’t forget to check out Chariots next week, it’s going to be a good one! Eli and Lamar have to find all the news this week, which I am sure has them thrilled as hell. :P

Aloha,
–Joe

You could always post what kind of motherboard you’re looking for, some of us have a bunch of old ones we’re not using, plus we could go looking a lot easier than trying to check around on the Blackberry.

    Just a thought.

This is what happens when you use the same system for work and porn. :/

A couple things you can try:

If this is a desktop, try re-seating the RAM sticks and the CMOS; just remove the RAM, then pop out the little watch battery-looking thingy (the CMOS battery), let it sit for a bit, then re-connect said parts. Just be sure the battery’s in right.

Next step: If you’re seeing the RAM getting recognized before it stalls, it’s getting somewhere. Try disconnecting the hard drive and any other peripherals, so you’re down to just MOBO and keyboard, and see if you can boot into BIOS.

If you CAN boot into BIOS, it’s not the motherboard, and is something else — possibly hard drive. If that’s the case, that can be scrubbed, cleaned, defragged, boot.ini files can be fixed, etc. (SpinRite?)

If you CAN’T boot into BIOS, try taking out one of the RAM sticks. If it works, then it’s a bad RAM stick. If it still doesn’t, then you’re looking at a motherboard problem.

But if you can get into BIOS and it looks like the issue is with the hard drive, another route to try would be to get a linux live cd and poke around in the boot files; it may be a windows thing. And if you risk damaging data via a re-install, you can back it up first through the live cd, and even install a linux flavor alongside your windows until you get things running straight.

If it’s a laptop, things get a little trickier. Same principles apply, but you’ll need some teeny tiny screwdrivers.
