AAI Coverage, Day 1 - Speaker: author Ben Akerley

Posted by moJoe On October - 2 - 2009

Ben Akerley is the author of The X-Rated Bible: An Irreverent Survey of Sex in the Scriptures, his talk is on the unholy mix of sex and religion.

It was a very entertaining presentation in which Mr. Akerley points out the apparent foibles in a traditional religious world view in which everything from masturbation to married sex is something to be feared and avoided. I recorded the whole speech, but I am unsure as to the audio quality, so I may only be able to publish a partial transcription later on.

  1. Tim Danaher says:

This is something about the desert dogmas that depresses me unutterably. One of the most basic human emotions is something to be feared and avoided. It goes along with the general self-hatred engendered by these tawdry, semitic mind-viruses.

Just recently I was reading ‘Roman Sex’ (John Clarke ISBN 978-0810942639), a study of attitudes towards sex & sexuality in the late republic / early empire, where sex was something to be cherished — a gift from the gods to be celebrated.

Made me really depressed, seeing where we are today.
